Refusing entry to the endzone for 56 minutes of the game? Ending the Patriots' 57-game streak without having any losses back-to-back? All I know is, it felt great to the Jets and their fans! Games like this ought to delight owners as well; it NFL games always turned out as predicted, why would people bother buying tickets?

I'd like to have seen one more miracle, though: Pats' coach Bill Belichick smiling while he's shaking Eric Mangini's hand. I can say that I am proud of our players for staying out of trouble in the off-season. There have been quite a few stories this summer of NFL players getting arrested for illegal activities. The Seahawks’ Wayne Hunter got arrested in connection with a bar brawl, Albert Haynesworth of the Tennessee Titans for reckless endangerment and Browns running back Reuben Droughns is charged in a domestic dispute. It is embarrassing to see players at this level acting like thuggish children. It’s hard to tell anymore what I can let my kids watch on TV because everywhere I turn there is another athlete going to jail for cocaine trafficking and the like.

It is funny how we hoist them up as heroes during the season and during their off time they go and act like common criminals. And who is accountable?

When you’re a Jet!

Cedric Houston of the New York Jets was involved in a car accident last Friday. Step one is easy--Come to the FREE Walk Kick-off Luncheon on March 30th at the Melville Marriott (1350 Old Walt Whitman Road, Melville NY). Besides lunch and info, you can have a chance to win an autographed Jets football OR 2 tickets to a Jets home game!

The Walk itself will be Saturday, May 20th, at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, NY. It's only 5K (just over 3 miles), and it's a chance to help a good cause and see some current and former team members who'll be there to help out too. Namath said. "We're going to have that stadium."

Unlike New York's 1969 Super Bowl win over the Baltimore Colts, Namath wouldn't guarantee a political victory for the Jets.

"Yeah, well, I had a little bit more to do with it, too," Namath said.

The Jets want to build a 75,000-seat stadium that would also be the centerpiece of the 2012 Olympics if the city is awarded the games. The project, which needs Albany's approval, would include a convention center. While the stadium itself would be financed by the Jets, the state and city would each contribute $300 million for related projects.

But key figures, including State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, have yet to support the proposal. The Public Authorities Control Board is to vote on the matter May 18.

Assembly members, labor unions and other stadium supporters rallied outside the Capitol on Monday. Bruno, who met with Namath on Monday, still hasn't made a decision, said his spokesman, Mark Hansen.

Opponents of the stadium include the owners of Madison Square Garden. They have filed a lawsuit seeking to void the Jets' successful bid for the right to build on the site of the West Side rail yards from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

MSG, which would compete with the new convention center for sports and entertainment events, says the bidding procedure for the rail yards was flawed and unfair.

This isn't the first time that Namath has supported the Jets. He started appearing in radio advertising paid for by the football team in August 2004.

Team Report:

- from FOXSports.com

FB Jerald Sowell, unhappy with his contract, was a no-show for the first two weeks of the offseason program. Sowell is coming off a career year (45 catches), but he had better be careful not to overplay his hand. Under new offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger, the fullback won't be as big a part of the passing attack at it was in Paul Hackett's system. Heimerdinger believes in using the tight ends and wideouts; Hackett treated the tight ends like linemen, which meant for opportunities for Sowell. . . .

Doug Brien, who became expendable when the Jets picked Ohio State's Mike Nugent in the second round, was released. It is amazing that Brien made 84 percent of his field-goals attempts in 2003 and 2004 and still got a pink slip. The reason, of course, is because he missed two in a playoff loss to the Steelers. . . .

The Jets made a good move by signing RG Brandon Moore to a modestly-priced, six-year contract. Moore, a former defensive lineman, was switched to guard and started 13 games last season. Also, many fans were probably disappointed in the use of the first pick on a kicker. But, it is a position that needs some development. Secondly, they decided to put a pick towards the corner.

The first pick (actually 2nd round, 47th overall) was Mike Nugent. Nugent attended Ohio State and has a few years kicking experience. He set a team record with most field goals made in 2002 with 25 and also was awarded the Lou Groza Award, which is awarded to the nation's top collegiate kicker.

Justin Miller was the teams’ second choice to fill a cornerback position. The candidates at cornerback are Carlos Rogers (Auburn), Justin Miller (Clemson) and Fabian Washington (Nebraska). The Jets need youth and speed at the position. They're set at right corner with David Barrett and are prepared to make Derrick Strait the nickel back, but the left corner spot needs an upgrade. Miller might be the most intriguing option because of his ability to return kicks.

At tight end, the Jets lost Anthony Becht (Bucs), and the only veteran left at the position is Chris Baker. Heath Miller has excellent hands and the speed to get downfield. The only concern is a sports hernia that prevented him from working out in the offseason. The Jets could draft a tackle in the second or third round, and N.C. State's Chris Colmer is a possibility. After losing Jason Ferguson (Cowboys), the Jets also must find a nose tackle on Day 1. Northwestern's Luis Castillo has caught the team's eye. On the second day, the Jets will address linebacker, the offensive line and, possibly, kicker.

Jets Pre-Draft Press Conference

The New York Jets just held their annual press conference this past Thursday where general manager Terry Bradway, head coach Herman Edwards & senior director of college scouting Jesse Kaye came together to discuss with the public plans for this draft.

"This is another opportunity for us in the draft to improve our football team. His willingness to block should help the perimeter running game. Coles also runs precise routes and never uses "alligator" arms to catch a ball, a la Moss. Though his recent average yards-per-catch doesn't show it, Coles does have excellent stopwatch speed. A chronic toe injury bears watching. This grouping is composed of Ronnie Brown, Carnell “Cadillac” Williams and the University of Texas’s Cedric Benson.

All three of these players have potential and every franchise is looking at putting their claws in during the first round of picks.

Brown and Williams are both coming from Auburn. Brown has the advantage by being slightly bigger build than Williams and therefore a better-rounded player. Overall, Williams has better footwork though. This past Wednesday, the National Football League owners announced that the 2010 event will be held at the New York Sports and Convention Center on Manhattan’s West Side. The stadium is set for a 2009 unveiling. The 2010 Super Bowl will bring great revenue to New York as it does for any place that holds it.

“Today is a landmark day, and the 2010 Super Bowl in the New York Sports and Convention Center will be a historic event. We’re thrilled about this announcement. I want to thank the NFL membership for granting the New York Jets and the City and State of New York the opportunity to showcase this week-long, mega-event in the greatest City in the world. The Super Bowl is more than a football game. The Super Bowl will have a tremendous impact on the local economy, and generate revenue for the community.”
Jets Owner Woody Johnson

OFFENSIVE ADJUSTMENTS:

- from FOXSports.com

For the first time since 2001, the Jets are using a new offensive system. New coordinator Mike Heimerdinger is planning to employ a more vertical passing attack than his predecessor, Paul Hackett. Whether that style fits QB Chad Pennington is a key question. Pennington doesn't have a big arm and seems better suited to a short- to intermediate passing attack. Heimderdinger also is planning to make better use of the bench, rotating in players such as RB Derrick Blaylock and WR Jerricho Cotchery. Both shows air locally on WCBS-TV and are produced by Bill Zagger of B-Train Films in New York.

Generation Jets, the team’s animated children’s show which wrapped up its second season in January, has been nominated in two categories, children’s programming and sports programming series. The show combines animation and live action, introducing young fans to a unique group of New York City kids as they explore many of the city’s historical landmarks, meet Jets players and coaches and learn valuable life lessons through football.

“Generation Jets is one of the many successful components of our efforts to build our brand through our media properties," said Bob Parente, Jets’ Vice President, Business Operations. “The show has been a key component in developing our GenJets initiative which includes youth events and clinics, a kids fan club, a website, merchandise, an after-school enrichment program, Generation Jets Academy and other educational opportunities on the middle school and high school levels. But most of all, it has been a vehicle that allows us to reach out to our younger fans.”

Also qualifying in the sports programming series category is 24/7 with Herman Edwards, which has run for the past three seasons. The show, featuring Jets head coach Herman Edwards, provides exclusive interviews and rare team footage, and gives a unique look at the twists and turns of the NFL season and the Jets preparations in their week-by-week journey.

“Jets 24/7 with Herman Edwards and Generation Jets, along with our pre-season television broadcasts, exhibit the outstanding relationship between the Jets, WCBS and B-Train Films,” added Parente. “We are excited to have the opportunity to create quality programming that creates excitement about the Jets on so many levels. Ultimately, the fans of Jets are the true beneficiaries.”

“It’s an honor to be nominated,” said Zagger. “Our objective when we started was to help the Jets achieve their goals of developing exclusive and unique programming that would appeal to their wide fan base. Strong ratings, excellent feedback we’ve received and nominations like this seem to indicate that those goals are being met.”

Marcus Paul joins Jets

Marcus Paul, former member of the New England Patriots, joins the New York Jets as Coach of Physical Development. Then Doug Brien missed the biggest kick he'll likely ever try.

Twice.

Jeff Reed did what Brien couldn't do -- make a game-winning field goal -- and the Steelers somehow beat the New York Jets 20-17 Saturday in a remarkable overtime playoff game filled with wild swings in momentum and emotion.

Roethlisberger overcame two huge interceptions -- one for a touchdown and another that appeared to doom the Steelers late in the fourth quarter -- to lead a decisive drive that began at their own 13 and sent Pittsburgh to next Sunday's AFC championship game at home against New England or Indianapolis.

Reed's 33-yarder with just more than 12 minutes gone in overtime won it and was his 19th successful conversion in a row, tying Gary Anderson's team record.

The loss will go down as one of the most excruciating in the Jets' star-crossed history. Brien's twin misses were doubly stunning disappointments for a gutty team on the verge of its biggest upset since Broadway Joe's guaranteed win over the Colts in the January 1969 Super Bowl.

``I've never seen anything like it,'' Steelers linebacker Larry Foote said. ``I'm not going to say it was a miracle, because that's crippled people getting up and walking, the blind seeing. But that's the closest thing to it I've ever seen.''

Steelers center Jeff Hartings felt much the same way, saying, ``God gave us another chance.''

Brien's 47-yarder with 1:58 remaining hit the goal post, but Roethlisberger gave the Jets the ball right back when his off-line throw was intercepted by David Barrett -- just the kind of mistake rookie quarterbacks are supposed to make in the playoffs, but Big Ben had rarely made during his 13-0 rookie season. The Jets then drove cautiously from the Steelers 37 to the 25, giving Brien a 43-yarder to win it on the final play of regulation.

But the kick sailed far to the left, not even close, and the given-a-reprieve Steelers danced joyously on their sidelines -- Roethlisberger right in the middle.

``I tried to hit it a little harder because I was real surprised I didn't have the distance,'' Brien said, referring to the 47-yarder. ``The second one I missed. The first one didn't go in.''

Brien's 28-yard kick in overtime beat San Diego last week -- yes, by the same 20-17 score -- and he hit a 42-yard FG to halt Pittsburgh's early momentum and make it 10-3 Pittsburgh early in the second quarter. He was 24-of-29 during the season.

``I had confidence in him, he made the one last week and I thought he could make it,'' Jets coach Herman Edwards said. ``We were kind of in a spot, there was nothing else we could really do, we had to kick the field goal. He's been a good kicker for us. It was just a tough day.''

The Jets became the first NFL team to play three consecutive overtime games, including their regular-season ending loss in St. Louis. They dropped to 0-7 in Pittsburgh and 2-16 all-time against the Steelers.

The Steelers are 1-3 in AFC title games under coach Bill Cowher, losing all three at home as big favorites, but linebacker Joey Porter senses this season will be different -- and not just because they have won a team-record 15 in a row. They were only the fourth NFL team in 26 years to go 15-1 during the regular season.

The Steelers won four Super Bowls in six seasons from 1974-79, but they have returned only once since, losing to Dallas after the '95 season.

``After what we went through today, I think it's our time,'' Porter said. ``The way these circumstances played out, it's our time.''

The Jets will wonder for years why they're not going to the AFC title game.

``This is about as frustrated as I've ever been in my career,'' said NFL rushing champion Curtis Martin, who was outrushed by Jerome Bettis 101-77 in a matchup of two of the NFL's top five career rushers. ``Right now I feel there is no end to my anger. ... We left our hearts out there today.''

And they left with a loss that might take more than an offseason to forget.

``I just feel bad for the team. I'll be fine,'' Brien said. ``I just feel bad for the guys that played so well, played so hard and came up short.''

The Jets turned two long touchdown returns, Santana Moss' 75-yard punt return and Reggie Tongue's 86-yard interception, into 17 consecutive points and a 17-10 lead in the fourth quarter that stunned nearly everyone in a jammed Heinz Field except the Jets.

After the Jets' 17-6 loss there Dec. 12, defensive lineman Shaun Ellis predicted they would win if they returned to Pittsburgh in the playoffs. Last week, it didn't appear anyone in the Steelers' locker room took him seriously.

When Bettis fumbled at the Jets 24 early in the fourth quarter -- his first fumble in 353 carries or receptions this season -- Ellis' confidence was looking like more than empty talk. Shades of Broadway Joe Namath?

But Roethlisberger then directed two pivotal scoring drives, just as he did last month against the Jets, with the first ending on his 4-yard scoring flip to Hines Ward. Roethlisberger finished 17-of-30 for 181 yards and two touchdowns.

``I did everything I could to lose the game,'' Roethlisberger said. ``I've got to play better. That was terrible. The game we played today is not going to cut it.''

Roethlisberger is only the fourth rookie to win his first playoff start since the 1970 NFL merger -- two others had prior pro experience in different leagues -- and he said he wasn't nervous.

``Maybe I should have been. I came out calm and relaxed and took it like a regular game,'' he said. ``Maybe next week I need to be a little more stressed.''

The Steelers, who haven't lost a divisional playoff game in seven tries under Cowher since 1993 and are 9-0 at home this season, surged to the 10-0 lead in the first quarter after Troy Polamalu's interception of Chad Pennington's pass. Bettis powered in from the 3 on the fifth play of the 25-yard drive following Roethlisberger's 9-yard completion to Ward.

Reed had given Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead with a 45-yard field goal.

The Jets appeared to be in big trouble, down 10-0. They scored only six points in each of their last two games against the Steelers and hadn't scored more than 10 points against them since 1988.

Pennington, whose arm strength and decision-making were questioned following his three-interception performance in Pittsburgh on Dec. 12, went 21-of-33 for 182 yards and an interception against the NFL's top-ranked defense.

Moss' 75-yard dash down the sideline was the first punt return for a touchdown in Jets playoff history and was a big jolt to the Steelers' normally strong special teams, which allowed only one punt return longer than 10 yards in their last 11 games.
Doug Brien seemed to have let the pressure get to his head. It was a extremely disappointing end to a good season. Chad Pennington did his part to overcome the Steelers, however, Doug Brien did not. Pennington played to the best of his ability, but ended up coming up short. Lets stay healthy, and make another run for it next year. GO JETS!

Great game, Great outcome!

From sports.yahoo.com:

Just imagine. On Saturday night there was a crucial mistake committed by a Jet in a playoff game that won't live in infamy as another sad "Same Old Jets" turning-point moment. Eric Barton's late hit on San Diego Chargers quarterback Drew Brees with less than 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter might only inspire a handful of angry calls to New York's sports radio stations this coming week.

Barton's ill-advised play will certainly not be remembered in the same breath as Mark Gastineau's game-turning late hit on Bernie Kosar in the Jets' ill-fated playoff game at Cleveland in January of 1987.

That's because Barton's boo-boo was redeemed by Doug Brien's 28-yard field goal with 0:05 remaining in overtime that pushed the Jets to a 20-17 Wild Card playoff victory over the favored host Chargers and a date next weekend on the road against the New England Patriots or Pittsburgh Steelers.

"I needed guys to dig me out of this and they did," Barton said afterwards, obviously relieved by Brien's heroics.

The Jets' victory, you see, was one of second chances.

Gang Green's defense had already begun a victory celebration when Brees' fourth down pass fell incomplete in their end zone with 24 seconds left in regulation and the Jets leading 17-10. But the Jets defenders didn't see that Barton, pressuring Brees on a blitz, had clubbed the quarterback on the helmet with his right hand after the pass was thrown.

The penalty gave the Chargers new life that Brees converted into a game-tying 1-yard TD pass to tight end Antonio Gates and leading to the overtime period.

Then the football gods turned their collective backs on the Chargers. On the host's second possession of OT, rookie kicker Nate Kaeding was wide right on a potential game-winning 40-yard field goal attempt.

Jets quarterback Chad Pennington drove his team downfield to set up Brien's game-winner, completing an 18-yard pass to Santana Moss and a 12-yarder to Justin McCareins. Reserve running back LaMont Jordan broke loose on a 19-yard run to put Brien in range.

After concluding the regular season with only two touchdown drives in two games, Pennington threw a pair of touchdown passes, including a season-long 47-yarder to Moss. He finished the night completing 23 of 33 for 279 yards.

Brien had a particularly bizarre evening, missing a 33-yard field goal on the Jets first drive of the night, barely making an extra point, and converting a 42-yarder in the third quarter that hit the right upright before bouncing on and over the crossbar. The field goal gave Gang Green a 17-7 lead.

The Jets also dodged bullets on consecutive plays in the third quarter - administrative miscues, if you will -- that saw them line up only 10 men on defense on two consecutive plays. San Diego, however, failed to capitalize on the mismatch.

And, aside from Barton's late hit, the only other major lapse in poise occurred on the Jets sideline, when head coach Herman Edwards and running backs coach Bishop Harris had to be separated by fullback Jerald Sowell after the duo became engaged in a heated second-half discussion.

"It was a family dispute," said Edwards after the game.

And now the Jets family is on to the second round of the playoffs.

Chad Pennington never ceases to amaze me. He has come through many times this season, this game is not any different. Curtis Martin also played a fantastic game. He had 153 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. With those 2 leading our offense, I believe that we will can make it all the way this year. Even though I love games like Saturdays game, I would really prefer to not have us in a game winning field goal situtation. But all it comes down to is who has more points on the board, and as long its the Jets I will be fine. Keep up the good work Jets and we will be in the Super Bowl in no time at all.

A Lost Opportunity

By Casey Pearce, from the official site of the New York Jets

All the New York Jets wanted for Christmas was an invitation to the postseason. They’ll have to wait one more week to see if their Holiday wish will be granted. The Green & White dropped a 23-7 decision to the New England Patriots at the Meadowlands Sunday and missed an opportunity to clinch an AFC Wild Card berth in the process.

“We knew what was at stake, and we didn’t get it done,” said head coach Herm Edwards . “We needed to win this one to get into the playoffs, and they came out here and kicked our tails.”

The Patriots offense kept Chad Pennington and company off the field for most of the afternoon. New England won the time of possession battle by more than 11 minutes and never let the Jets establish any offensive rhythm.

“We just couldn’t convert anything,” Edwards said. “They controlled the clock and dictated the pace of the game. We didn’t get many opportunities on offense.”

After a slow first quarter, Tom Brady led the Patriots on a 15-play, 59-yard drive that ended in a 28-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri. The kick gave New England a 3-0 lead. Brady completed five of his seven passing attempts for 49 yards on the drive.

The Patriots held New York to just 101 yards of total offense in the first half and allowed little running room throughout the day. Curtis Martin had a season-low 33 yards on 13 carries.

Midway through the second quarter, Brady capped off an eight-play, 86-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end Daniel Graham. The two-time Super Bowl MVP was 21-for-32 passing Sunday, racking up 264 yards and two scores.

After forcing the Jets to go three-and-out late in the second quarter, New England was again able to build on their lead. Brady hooked up with Deion Branch for a 21-yard gain that set up Vinatieri’s second field goal of the evening, a 28 yarder that made it a 13-0 contest at the break.

The margin would widen in the second half. Vinatieri’s 26-yard field goal late in the third quarter pushed New England’s lead to 16-0, and Brady’s second touchdown pass of the afternoon, a six-yard toss to Deion Branch, pushed it to 23-0.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Jets got on the scoreboard when Pennington put together his best drive of the day. New York’s signal caller completed seven of nine attempts on the Green & White’s only scoring march of the afternoon. Santana Moss’s 15-yard catch and run made it a 23-7 contest, but unfortunately that was as close as the Jets would get.

After holding Corey Dillon to just 24 yards in the opening half, New England’s feature back churned out a tough 65 yards in the closing two quarters to help control the pace.

“Once Dillon got going, we just couldn’t get on the field,” Edwards said. “We asked a lot of our defense today. They were out there a long time and held tough, but it makes it difficult when they have to be out there that long.”

Despite falling Sunday, the Jets continue to control their own playoff destiny. With a win over the Rams in St. Louis next week, New York will be invited to the postseason.

“We just didn’t play well today,” Edwards said. “Fortunately, we’ve got another week. We still have an opportunity to get in the playoffs, but now we have to go win one on the road.”

LaMont tramples on Jets' 'O'

BY RICH CIMINI, DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

During the Jets' 17-6 loss to the Steelers, LaMont Jordan was so upset by the lack of offense (and probably his own lack of playing time) that he fumed on the sideline, cursing to himself. Yesterday, he vented publicly, sans the expletives.

Jordan, standing in the middle of the locker room, ripped the Jets' offense, basically saying it turns to mush against top-flight competition. The backup running back, turning up the heat on the entire organization, also said it would be "very embarrassing" if the Jets don't qualify for the postseason after a 5-0 start.

"In my opinion, if we don't make the playoffs, we would be the most underachieving team in the NFL," he said. "We have too many good players. ... Offensively, for us to be playing the way we're playing, that's unacceptable."

The Jets (9-4) still have the inside track on the AFC's top wild-card berth, but they could slide if the offense doesn't perk up over the final three games. Herman Edwards and Chad Pennington echoed that sentiment, but no one said it more bluntly than Jordan.

"Offensively, we haven't gotten the job done at all," he said. "Right now, we're struggling. Against the good teams, we don't do anything. That's the bottom line.

"People around here might not like me saying that, but it's the truth," Jordan continued. "I'm a guy that speaks the truth. Against good teams, against good defenses, we haven't done a thing. If anybody has a problem with what I said, then they have a problem, but I'm speaking the truth."

He's right. Against the two best teams they've faced, the Steelers and Patriots (both 12-1), the Jets managed a total of 13 points. Another way to look at it: They've played five games against top-10 defenses (in points allowed), and they've averaged only 12.6 points per game in those contests.

Jordan claimed he wasn't blaming offensive coordinator Paul Hackett, saying it's an across-the-board problem.

"I'm not the only one who's upset with what's going on, offensively, but I'm going to step up and say something about it," said Jordan, who had only three carries against the Steelers. "That's how I feel. If we're going to go to the playoffs, the offense has to get the job done. ... If everyone on the offense doesn't feel the same way I do, there's a problem."

Edwards seemed more disappointed by this loss than the previous three. After downplaying the measuring-stick angle in the days leading up to the game, he acknowledged that losing to Pittsburgh showed the Jets aren't an elite team - yet. And if they can't beat the big boys, it could mean an early exit from the playoffs, he predicted.

"You're going to lose the first game, you're going to be out," Edwards said. "That's not a lot of fun. Why even go? I mean, that's like going to Disneyland and saying you can't ride any rides."

Edwards said the Jets have played three upper-echelon teams - Patriots, Steelers and Ravens - and they've lost all three. They're 2-4 against teams with winning records.

"It's to a point where you're a little disappointed," said Edwards, adding, "I'm tired of talking about it. The players are tired of talking about it."

The coach said they need more big plays in the passing game. In the last five games, the Jets have produced only six completions longer than 20 yards. In the two games since Pennington's return from a shoulder injury, they've managed only two pass plays in the 20-plus category.

"If we're going to be a championship-caliber team, we have to score points," said Pennington, noting that the weekly goal is 24 points - a mark they've reached only four times. "You can't expect to win a championship scoring under 20 points."

Jets Grind Out Comeback Win Over Browns

By Casey Pearce

The New York Jets trailed the Cleveland Browns for nearly two and a half quarters Sunday afternoon, but they gained the upper hand when it counted.

Justin McCareins caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Quincy Carter with 5:32 remaining in the fourth quarter Sunday to give the Green & White their only lead of the contest as the Jets improved to 7-3 on the season.

“It wasn’t pretty at all,” head coach Herm Edwards said of his team’s 10-7 win. “We had to come here and get a win, and we didn’t care what we had to do to get it. After what we went through last week, this win was huge for us, and it shows what kind of character we have as a team.”

The Green & White struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the opening half as Carter was sacked five times. The Jets amassed just 79 yards of total offense through two quarters and found themselves down 7-0 at halftime.

“Quincy may have held the ball a little longer than he should have because he didn’t want to turn it over,” Edwards said. “He adjusted and made some good throws that helped us late.”

New York threatened early as Carter hit wide receiver McCareins for a pair of 12-yard gains on the first two plays of the game. After two short runs by Curtis Martin, the Jets were forced to try a 43-yard field goal. Doug Brien’s attempt was blocked by Cleveland’s Orpheus Roye and fell well short.

A field position game followed as Toby Gowin and Derrick Frost traded eight punts in the opening half before the Browns broke things open. Following a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty against Shaun Ellis, Cleveland running back William Green ripped off a 21-yard run to put the Browns in business. Four plays later, Jeff Garcia found tight end Aaron Shea from three yards out to give Cleveland a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Garcia enjoyed an impressive first half, completing 10 of his 17 passing attempts for 88 yards and a touchdown, but an injurty to his throwing shoulder forced the former Pro Bowler to sit out the second half. Kelly Holcombetook over but was just 4 of 10 for 32 yards in relief of Garcia.

The Browns got a chance to extend their lead late in the half, but Phil Dawson’s 42-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right, keeping it a one-possession contest. It was Dawson’s first miss of the season.

Sunday was another day of milestones for Martin. Midway through the first quarter, the ten-year veteran surpassed the 1,000-yard mark on the season, making him and Barry Sanders the only backs in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of their first 10 seasons in the league. With 88 yards in the game, Martin also passed Hall of Famer and fellow Pittsburgh alum Tony Dorsett to move into sixth place on the NFL’s all-time rushing list.

After forcing Cleveland to punt on their opening drive of the third quarter, the Jets were able to get on the board. Carter went downfield to Santana Moss and McCareins for plays of 12 and 14 yards respectively. The one-two punch of Martin and LaMont Jordan on the ground put New York in field goal range, and Brien’s 41-yard kick made it a 7-3 contest. Carter was sacked just once in the second half and finished 11-for-20 passing for 116 yards and a touchdown.

“We did a good job of countering what they were trying to do to us by getting the ball out there quickly,” Edwards said. “They blitzed us a lot and did some good things early. When our runners started moving the chains, that relieved some of the pressure and really helped us.”

The Green & White got a favorable bounce when Browns return man Dennis Northcutt muffed a punt late in the third quarter. B.J. Askew recovered for the Jets to give the offense the ball in plus territory. Unfortunately Carter was intercepted three plays later, and the Jets were unable to cash in on the turnover.

The Browns proceeded to chew up 7:33 of the game clock on a 17-play drive in which they advanced to the New York 17-yard line. But the Jets got yet another break when Dawson missed for the second time on the afternoon, the latter miss coming from 34 yards out.

“Things did go our way a little bit, but our defense played fabulous,” Edwards said. “They came up with some big stops and kept the game within reach. All we wanted was a chance at the end, and they gave us that.”

The Jets took over and put together an impressive 10-play, 75-yard that led to their first lead of the ballgame. Martin and Jordan opened the drive with seven consecutive bruising runs that pushed the ball to the Browns’ 33. On 3rd-and-11, Carter connected with McCareins just short of the sticks, but the long-armed receiver used every bit of his 6-2 frame to stretch just past the first down marker.

“I knew I was a little short when I ran the route,” said McCareins, who finished with a game-high six catches for 71 yards to go along with his game-winning touchdown. “I just reached out and was fortunate to make the play.”

Carter immediately turned to Moss for a 13-yard pickup that put the ball on Browns’ 11. McCareins then put the finishing touches on the drive when he caught a quick flare and broke a tackle before waltzing in for his third touchdown catch of the season. Brien’s PAT made it a 10-7 contest.

“We’d practiced those throws all week because of some of the things we anticipated from Cleveland,” Edwards said. “They leave the corners out there and play off coverage. With Santana’s ability to make people miss and the fact that Justin is a hard guy to tackle, we took advantage of that.”

Donnie Henderson’s defensive unit quickly forced a punt, leaving Jordan to single-handedly run out the clock on his own and preserve New York’s seventh win of the season. Jordan rushed for 73 yards Sunday with 64 of those coming in the final quarter. As a team, the Jets ran for 157 yards Sunday.

“Offensively, we struggled a little bit early,” Jordan said. “When you run the ball, you have to just stick to it, and eventually one team is going to get tired. You have to give them credit defensively, but we kept fighting and put it in the end zone when it counted.”

The 7-3 Jets will have little time to enjoy their seventh victory of the season as they step out of conference next week with a trip to Arizona to take on the Cardinals next Sunday.

“It feels good, but we’re not going to rest until we make the playoffs,” Jordan said. “This was another step towards that, but we’ve got six more now. Our mind immediately turns to Arizona.”

Late Scoring Frenzy Gives Jets Lead at Half

By Casey Pearce, From NFL.com

New York fans vividly remember the 23-point fourth quarter rally that it took for the Green & White to pull out a 40-37 overtime victory the last time the Jets and Dolphins met on Monday Night Football.

There was no need for a late comeback this time. The Jets jumped on Miami early and scored on their first four possessions of the second half en route to a 41-14 victory over the Dolphins Monday Night.

“Coming off of a loss, we needed that,” Jets head coach Herm Edwards said. “We played well in all areas and were able to pull out a big win. You don’t want to get a couple of losses in a row, and we were able to avoid that trap.”

The Green & White enjoyed their most prolific offensive game of the season, racking up 472 total yards on the evening. LaMont Jordan and Curtis Martin rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown each, marking the first time since September of 1975 that two Jet backs have topped the century mark in a game.

The Jets got on the scoreboard first as they were able to cash in on a Miami turnover. With the Dolphins driving midway through the first quarter, Jay Fielder connected with TE Donald Lee for an eight-yard gain, but Reggie Tongue’s vicious hit knocked the ball loose. Tongue recovered the fumble, and the Jets took over at their own 48-yard line.

It took just three plays for New York to capitalize. After a 14-yard run by Martin, Chad Pennington found a wide-open Wayne Chrebet streaking down the middle of the field for a 35-yard touchdown that gave the Jets an early 7-0 lead.

Defensive end John Abraham continued his stellar play. On 3rd-and-four late in the opening quarter, Abraham sacked Fiedler for a nine-yard loss, forcing the Dolphins to punt. With the sack, Abraham moved into the NFL lead with 8.5 on the season.

Late in the second quarter, the Jets had a difficult time finding an answer for Miami TE Randy McMichael. The former Georgia Bulldog caught four passes for 63 yards as the Dolphins drove 91 yards for a game-tying score. On McMichael’s fourth catch of the drive, Fielder found him from 28-yards out for a touchdown to tie it at seven a piece.

The Green & White wasted no time answering. After a 14-yard run by Jordan, Pennington found Justin McCareins all alone near the sideline. As he was falling out of bounds, McCareins used his entire wingspan to stretch the ball over the goal line for the 27-yard touchdown. It was McCareins’ first score as a Jet and gave New York a 14-7 lead.

"He stretched out like Gumby," Edwards said of his receiver’s reach toward the end zone.

After forcing the Dolphins to go three-and-out, the Jets got the ball back at their own 30-yard line with 20 seconds left in the second quarter. Martin’s 12-yard run on a draw play followed by catches by McCareins and Chrebet gave K Doug Brien a shot at a 49-yard field goal with one second left in the half. Brien split the uprights, and the Jets took at 17-7 lead into the locker room.

The momentum that the Jets gained before the break carried over into the second half. On New York’s first possession of the third quarter, Pennington led the Green & White on a 9-play, 65-yard drive that Martin capped off with a 25-yard touchdown run. Brien’s PAT made it a 24-7 contest.

“The points we scored before the half gave us a lot of energy,” Edwards said. “We wanted to come out in the second half and put points on the board, and we did that.”

The Jets defense continued to harass Fiedler. On Miami’s opening possession of the second half, Jason Ferguson and Jonathan Vilma combined to sack the Dolphins’ signal caller and forcing another Matt Turk punt. The Jets sacked Fiedler four times Monday.

“Like we always try to do, we made them one-handed,” Edwards said. “We stopped the run and then really got after them.”

On the ensuing drive, a 47-yard reception by Santana Moss and a 21-yard catch by Jordan set up Pennington’s one-yard touchdown pass to TE Chris Baker, extending the Jets’ lead to 31-7. Pennington finished 11-19 passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns on the evening.

After a 43-yard field goal by Brien extended the New York lead to 27, Jon McGraw intercepted Fiedler to give the Jets another scoring chance. Jordan rushed for 16 and 25 yards on consecutive plays and reached pay dirt on the latter to make it a 41-7 game.

Quincy Carter saw his first action as a Jet, relieving Pennington late in the game. Carter completed his only attempt on the night, an eight yard pass to Jerald Sowell.

The Jets (6-1) must now turn their attention to another AFC East foe. New York travels to Buffalo this Sunday to take on a Bills team that is coming off a 38-14 win over Arizona.

“We’ve got a short week to get ready for a good football team,” Edwards said. “Like always, we’ll enjoy this for a little while. Then we’ll start to prepare for another one that’s going to be big.

Pennington does it again

Down 14-13 with 5:58 to go, Chad Pennington calmly led his team 60 yards to set up the winning field goal. Doug Brien nailed the 38-yarder with 58 seconds remaining to lift the Jets to a 16-14 victory, moving them to 4-0 for the second time in franchise history.

After last weeks performance not up to his par, Mr. Pennington really pulled it off this week. He and Curtis Martin really played a great game. It probably shouldn't have come down to a field goal but a win is a win and a close win is entertaining. We are getting especially lucky this year with no big injuries and it is really helping us get to we want to be this year. If we can keep up this play, we can get the Patriots in 2 weeks. Now lets make it 5, and get the 49ers while they are down.

Keep it up

This week, I think I can safely say, we have a much easiar game then our first 2.
