Heavy rainfall is screwing up the first day of training camp today. The article I read about it mentioned “the usual flooding” spots in the Hofstra soccer stadium. Um, if there are usual flooding spots, don’t you usually fix that? What kind of facility are these guys playing in?

Back at Hofstra

The Jets return to Hofstra for training this week. Which for fans means it's party time, as we gear up for Generation Jets Fest and the upcoming season. For players it means competing for a spot on the field and figuring out how to manage high expectations based on last year's performance. Everyone got their game face ready?

Clement sticks with Jets

Not much was said about Anthony Clement when he "left" the Jets as an unrestricted free agent - fair enough, he resigned with the Jets 17 days after that. Clement has since explained that he knew he wasn't leaving, and that he stayed because he likes the Jets. He did say, however, that NYC was not his first CITY of choice, but his first team of choice nonetheless.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum wants productivity and consistency from his players, and Jerricho Cotchery is that type of player. Tannenbaum announced that the Jets will be extending his contract. He's started every game and with 961 yards received, 82 catches, and six touchdowns he has earned his starting role. No doubt Cotchery will continue to be a key contributor.

New York Jets will keep Schottenheimer: the offensive coordinator officially withdrew his name from consideration for the Miami Dolphins' head coaching vacany. Eric Mangini, New York Jets Head Coach, released the following statement: "Brian's creative approach on offense was an integral part of our progress in the 2006 season, and I'm pleased he will remain with the Jets to build on that progress."

The New York Jets dropped to 7-6 on the season Sunday, falling to the Buffalo Bills at the Meadowlands by a 31-13 score. New York finished -2 in the turnover differential department and Buffalo scored 14 points off those miscues to gain a split of the season series.

Hopefully we can keep it together for our game against the Vikings on Sunday.

Going All the Way

The Jets could actually pull off a victory in the AFC East.

The good news for the Jets is that they play a relatively "soft" schedule to close things out with home games against Buffalo and Oakland and road games verses the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings. Each of these games is winnable since we’re talking about four teams with losing records.

If you’re a betting man, then I’d put my money on the Jets. I’ve heard they’re getting pretty good odds too.

Rookie coach Eric Mangini has turned the New York Jets into playoff contenders in his first year in charge. With Mangini in charge the Jets are 2 games behind the first place New England Patriots.

This has definitely been a rebuilding year for the Jets, who ended the 2005 season with 4 wins and 12 loses. The current standing of 6 wins and 5 loses is already an improvement from the previous season.

To make the odds even better, the Jets will not play a team that currently has a winning record in their last five games before the playoffs.

Jets Fly Over New England

What was the biggest miracle performed by the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium Sunday? Refusing entry to the endzone for 56 minutes of the game? Ending the Patriots' 57-game streak without having any losses back-to-back? All I know is, it felt great to the Jets and their fans! Games like this ought to delight owners as well; it NFL games always turned out as predicted, why would people bother buying tickets?

I'd like to have seen one more miracle, though: Pats' coach Bill Belichick smiling while he's shaking Eric Mangini's hand. Belichick ought to be proud of having taught Mangini well, not hurt that he dared to make a career move into a head coaching job of his own.

Farewell, Curtis “Miracle” Martin

Curtis Martin has announced that he is ending this season with the New York Jets, upon the recommendation of his physicians. Actually, the doctors who operated on his knee almost a year ago advised him that playing was jeopardizing his future life functioning, even such things as walking normally. Still, Curtis Martin, who has endured nine years of playing through the pain was not the type to give up without one last try. The Jets, who have benefited so much from the amazing #28, left the final decision to Martin.

If this turns out to be his actual retirement from professional football, Curtis Martin leaves as the 4^th leading rusher in NFL history.

Jets Good At Drama As Well As Football

Even though our Jets led the whole game against the Detroit Lions Sunday, the Lions came within a touchdown with only 2:22 to go. We had to hang on by our fingernails, and Coach Eric Mangini stated, “I didn’t take a deep breath until we got that last first down.” Maybe he was recalling that the last three game the Jets have won have all come down to the outcome of the opponents’ final possession.

Maybe our upcoming game with the 1-and-5 Cleveland Browns doesn’t need to be such a cliffhanger!

We almost had ‘em.

Few can argue that Peyton Manning is positioning himself as a top quarterback of his generation. We knew that was going to be a lot to contend with. Still, we showed that we’re for real, and Justin Miller once again proved what a stud he is on the field. It ain’t every day you see a 103-yard touchdown run.

Aw, the Jets Came So Close!

So nice to be back after the unplanned interruptions of summer. But yesterday I thought we New York Jets fans would have something huge to cheer about. Well, let’s cheer about some smaller but significant things – we held our own against the Patriots, even jumped ahead with that 103-yard kick return of Justin Miller’s. That should have knocked the wind out of their sails, but there’s a reason why New England has been such a force to reckon with in the AFC East, and in the NFL for that matter. But we still kept battling to the end – I lost track of how many plays our Jets got off in the last few seconds!

We get another crack at the Pats up in Gillette Stadium November 12^th. Sure would like tickets to see another really close game with the win going to the visitors!

I have been living in New York for some time now and it has slowly dawned on me that our baseball teams are more enthusiastically supported than our NFL teams here in the Apple. I fear that the introduction of players such as Anthony Schegel, who is inarguably competent yet noticeably uninspiring, will do little to further interest in the New York Jets among resident fans.

Maybe the New York Jets’ brand new coach, 35-year-old Eric Mangini, is the youngest in the NFL, but look who he had for a teacher: the New England Patriots’ Bill Bedichick. Too bad we'll be going up against the Patriots -- twice.

The Pats are the team to beat in the AFC East. Well, all right, we need to beat the Dolphins and the Bills as well. Wouldn't it be cool if Mangini could beat his former mentor at his own game? It can't hurt (us) that the Pats have lost some key components, the most noticeable being Adam Vinatieri.

Meanwhile, we have some guys coming back that I love to watch: Jonathon Vilma, Shaun Ellis, and Chad Pennington. A couple more reasons I want Jets tickets: to see what D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Trey Teague can do when they join Brandon Moore on our offensive line.

I don’t have much New York Jets news to report on. I can say that I am proud of our players for staying out of trouble in the off-season. There have been quite a few stories this summer of NFL players getting arrested for illegal activities. The Seahawks’ Wayne Hunter got arrested in connection with a bar brawl, Albert Haynesworth of the Tennessee Titans for reckless endangerment and Browns running back Reuben Droughns is charged in a domestic dispute. It is embarrassing to see players at this level acting like thuggish children. It’s hard to tell anymore what I can let my kids watch on TV because everywhere I turn there is another athlete going to jail for cocaine trafficking and the like.

It is funny how we hoist them up as heroes during the season and during their off time they go and act like common criminals. Then they get slapped on the wrists for transgressions that would land a regular man in prison. Where are their morals? And who is accountable?

Cedric Houston of the New York Jets was involved in a car accident last Friday. The running back was mildly injured but released from the hospital the same night as his wounds were not life-threatening. Houston was the passenger in the car and there is no scandal attached to the incident. Houston will be further evaluated by the team doctors before they will report on his status for the 2006 season. I am glad he is ok and wish him a speedy recovery.

Victor Green has signed with the New York Jets again so he retires as a Jet. He spent eight years with the Jets and was a great player all around. I think it is pretty cool that the Jets let him sign on. The Dallas Cowboys did it for Emmitt Smith after all.
